Urszula Mach-Bryson, Noh and Chanoyu. Correlations between the art of theater and the art of tea

The author of the article describes various points of contact between two seemingly distinctive art forms: Japanese classical Noh theater and the Japanese Way of Tea, chanoyu. The similarities concern formal sides of the two art forms, the philosophical background the practice is based on, shared topics and motifs, creating the physical and nonphysical space in which the meeting of actor and viewer, host and guest takes place. The author describes the process of learning, deepening one’s practice, and the mutual borrowing and coexistence of the arts of Noh and chanoyu.
